Viral benchmarks claiming NVIDIA's RTX 5090 doubles the performance of the RTX 4090 rest on a narrower foundation than the posts suggest. The "2x" figure originates from NVIDIA's CES 2025 announcement, where the company framed it as "up to 2x" โ a ceiling reached only in specific titles running DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, which counts AI-generated frames in reported frame rates. In native rendering, independent testing shows the generational gain falls well short of a doubling.
The figure is not an invention of benchmark accounts. It comes directly from NVIDIA's CES 2025 presentation, a primary source confirmed during this review of seven primary sources. But the company's own phrasing carried a qualifier โ "up to" โ that much of the circulating content omits.
Three independent measurement sets put the RTX 5090's pure GPU performance far below the doubling implied in the viral posts. The card averaged 35 percent faster than the RTX 4090 in raster rendering and 32 percent faster in ray-traced workloads. In creator workloads, results ranged from 9 percent to 38 percent depending on the application. No native rendering category approaches a 2x multiple.
The "2x" claim holds only under a specific configuration: DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation at its 4X setting, in particular games, where AI-generated frames are added to rendered ones in the reported frame rate. That is a measure of AI-assisted frame output, not raw GPU throughput. Benchmarks spreading the 2x figure without frame generation enabled present an exaggerated picture of the card's rendering performance.
