Glass substrates are emerging as a leading candidate to succeed conventional organic substrates in advanced semiconductor packaging. The material offers superior flatness, dimensional stability and thermal resistance, allowing chip designers to pack interconnects more densely — a critical advantage as AI accelerators and high-performance processors outgrow what traditional packaging can handle.

Global interest in the technology has accelerated. Chipmakers and packaging companies, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, have been examining glass substrate adoption as AI workloads push the limits of existing materials. Intel has also demonstrated its own glass substrate research, signaling that the technology is viewed as a long-term pillar of next-generation packaging rather than a niche experiment.

For JNTC, the 347 billion won investment marks a strategic entry into this segment, positioning the company as a domestic supplier in a field where Korean players have so far been largely absent from mass production.

Gimcheon as Production Base

Gimcheon, a city in North Gyeongsang Province, will host the new production base. The location aligns with South Korea's broader push to expand semiconductor manufacturing beyond the Seoul metropolitan area, as the government and regional authorities compete to build chip cluster infrastructure outside the greater capital region.

The project ties JNTC's glass processing background to the packaging demands of the AI era, where substrate technology is becoming as decisive as wafer fabrication in determining chip performance.
