The rivalry between AMD CEO Lisa Su and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is not just a battle between two leading AI chip companies — the two executives are relatives, with Su being the uncle-niece relation to Huang through their family ties. As AMD and Nvidia compete for dominance in GPUs and AI accelerators, the family connection adds a notable dimension to one of the semiconductor industry's most closely watched rivalries.
Lisa Su, who leads AMD, and Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, are related — Su is the niece of Huang, making the competition between the two companies a contest between family members. Both lead firms at the center of the AI computing boom, with Nvidia dominant in GPUs for AI training and AMD positioning itself as the chief challenger in both CPUs and AI accelerators.
The relationship is widely reported in coverage of the two executives, whose companies have become direct competitors in data center and AI chip markets.
Under Su, AMD has pursued Nvidia's lead in AI hardware, while Huang's Nvidia has become the defining supplier of GPUs powering large-scale AI systems. The personal connection between the two CEOs underscores how closely linked the Taiwan-origin family histories behind the two chipmakers are, even as their companies compete for the same customers.
The precise details of the family relationship and the extent of personal contact between the two executives remain a subject of popular coverage rather than detailed corporate disclosure.
