From Alexa to humanoid robots

Prasad served as Amazon's AI chief and was a central figure in building Alexa, one of the most widely deployed consumer voice assistants. His appointment places a veteran of large-scale consumer AI at the top of Boston Dynamics, the robotics company Hyundai Motor Group acquired from SoftBank in 2021.

A strategic gamble for Hyundai

The move is being framed as a strategic play for Hyundai Motor Group's robotics business. While the framing of the appointment as a "gamble" is an interpretive characterization rather than official language, it does not conflict with the facts of the leadership change. Boston Dynamics is best known for its Atlas humanoid robot and Spot quadruped, and the group has positioned robotics as a key future growth area alongside its automotive business.

Prasad's profile image has appeared on Boston Dynamics' official website, consistent with his new role at the company. The exact scope of his mandate, including how quickly Boston Dynamics will push commercialization of its humanoid platforms, has not been laid out in detail.

The leadership change underscores the intensity of competition in robotics, where automakers and tech companies alike are racing to field commercially viable humanoids.

The claim that the AI chief behind Amazon Alexa has taken over as CEO of Hyundai's Boston Dynamics in a strategic robotics push is True.
