Partly True
The claim that "AI swallowed copper" — that the boom in AI infrastructure has become a dominant force in copper demand — holds only in part. AI data centers, servers and networking equipment do consume significant amounts of copper, but the broader copper market remains shaped by many other sectors, and AI is not the sole driver of recent demand trends.
AI data center buildouts require substantial copper for power distribution, cabling, cooling systems and interconnects. As companies including Samsung, SK hynix and global hyperscalers expand AI-related capacity, demand for copper used in servers and semiconductor manufacturing equipment has grown alongside the industry's investment cycle.
Copper demand is also driven by construction, electric vehicles, power grids and consumer electronics. While AI has added a new and growing source of consumption, the claim's implication that AI alone has "swallowed" the copper market overstates the effect. Other sectors continue to account for a large share of overall demand, and supply-side factors such as mining output and refining capacity also shape the market.
AI's pull on copper demand is real but one factor among several, making the claim Partly True.
